It's a kind of cancer that leaves her incapable of walking. She relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Miller has been a dancer since childhood in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, an Pittsburgh suburb. She was studying under the direction of her mother at the Maryen Lorrain Dance Studio. Miller was 14 when she was given choreography and coaching duties for one of her mother’s competition dance teams. Miller eventually assumed control of the studio in 1995 and renamed it Reign Dance Productions. Miller was certified by Dance Masters of America in 1986, and became an associate member of Dance Masters of Pennsylvania Chapter 10 in February 2012. But her membership was terminated by the DMA in February 2012 when the DMA stated that Miller's reality-TV show Dance Moms was "a complete misrepresentation of dance teachers and students and was detrimental to the dance industry."
